Chris Goldfinger

Last Sunday (27/04/03) saw Radio 1's dancehall DJ, Chris Goldfinger visit Reading's Matrix nightclub, we were lucky enough to grab some of Chris' time to discuss some of the hot topics of the day like his views on the UK World Cup Clash held a couple of weeks ago, the idea of clashing with David Rodigan and even restrictions on what he can play on the radio.

Many thanks to Chris for his time (and patience when we had a flat battery!).  Thanks also to Naptali of Roots Rockers and MMW Promotions for arranging the interview.

  Dance Review:

Chris with the Roots Rockers crew

Trying to get people out to rave on a Sunday night is easier said than done but that's just what MMW Promotions are doing with their recent line up of events being held at the Matrix nightclub. So far this year we've had two visits from Radio 1's Chris Goldfinger as well as appearances from the majority of Reading sound systems and a number visiting sounds from areas like Bristol, Swindon and London.  With more events like Carnival parties and the visit of Morgan Heritage coming up be sure to keep an eye on the What's On page so you don't miss out.

Tonight's line up saw us entertained by Roots Rockers, Classic Wonder, and Chris Goldfinger.  Roots Rockers started the early warm up with some nice roots and culture. Solo from Classic Wonder stepped up next and played a short but solid set with some nice Classic Wonder specials featuring artists like Freddie McGregor, we would have liked to have heard more of Classic but time must have been getting on.  Next saw Roots Rockers back on the decks who continued to warm up the steadily growing crowd with a few bashment tunes this time around.

Chris Goldfinger came on shortly after midnight and first played some of the latest R'n'B tunes, these were appreciated by a few people but you could tell that most were waiting for him to step into dancehall.  When Chris had finished with the R'n'B he started playing some of the recent classics and it was then the dance really started hotting up, tunes like Everton Blender's 'Lift Up Your Head', Buju Banton's 'Mr Nine' and VC's 'By His Deeds' all saw the excitement grow with lighters flashing and calls for the selector to pull up.

Next Goldfinger stepped the pace up another level and started playing all the latest, hottest dancehall tunes.  This is where Chris comes into his own and he must have covered every big tune and riddim out at the moment, you name it he played it, with a mixture of straight cuts and Asha World Movement specials all juggled to perfection. The crowd was well into the vibe by this time with a few of the girls showing off the latest dance moves from Jamaica. Chris kept everyone rocking 'til 2am when the lights sadly came on and reminded us it was work in the morning!

All in all a very enjoyable night, there was no trouble and the Matrix staff were friendly, the dance was held in the smaller room at Matrix and all the disco lights were turned off to give it the authentic dancehall feel, it was almost like being in Central!  It wasn't ram but there must have been a good 200 people there which is a good turn out for a Sunday night in Reading and it was plenty enough to create a party atmosphere.
